Tsuruoka City is located in the heart of the Shonai Plain, a rice-producing region surrounded by the Three Mountains of Dewa and Mt. Chokai. The city has prospered since its origin as the castle town for the Shonai domain ruled by the house of Sakai, a legacy that is very much in evidence today in the form of the area's numerous historic sites and cultural properties. Tsuruoka is also the hometown of author Shuhei Fujisawa.
